Trigger Warnings

Started by: MrsC (91)

Many films on 'Talking Pictures ' , warn of content that may cause offence or distress . I often sit waiting for some terrible scene to manifest ....and wait , and wait . In the end I'm left wondering what on earth were they referring to .

The slightest wink of an eye today can sometimes offend the viewer who is, looking to be offended, They sit there and watch and listen for anything that might be offensive, A pointed finger at a black person or a glare at a short person, A Tattoo of a Nazi perhaps, Even a Catholic wearing a cross is now seen to be an insult to an Asian, You just can't be too careful ,

They are mainly older films, which contain stuff that today would be unacceptable.

It's since we've allowed the Woke Society to take over our TV channels.
I gave up on modern TV shows about 3 or 4 years ago.

Thanks for that info about Kes, my favourite is the caning scene, and the actor who played the headmaster, had himself been an headmaster of an inner city secondary school, hence the chilling realism with which he played the role.

And rightly so Peter, I remember watching it for the first time and, I found it very disturbing watching a vet shoving his arm up a cows bum and, it happened often, So I stopped watching it,,,

The beginning of a film etc on Talking Pictures is just showing how it was in the days of the British Board of Film Censors and Council Watch Committes at the old cinema's

Bodies at both national and local level comprising people who took great delight in watching the films themselves and then deciding if they were suitable for we, the general public to watch!

OC,

'Council Watch Committees': I bet not many people remember them.

When I lived in Manchester in 1960's, they banned the film, 'It Happened Here'. No prior announcement, we turned up to view said film only to find it was not going to be shown.

It has since been shown on TV, and I can think of nothing in the content that might have prompted the ban.

I think it was an ideological response and the very idea they wished to quash: the film postulated a Nazi victory in WW2, and subsequent occupied Nazi England. It resolved with a US invasion with GIs coming from Ireland to landings in NW England.

Not an outstanding film, by any means.

Also though, not a film which in any way shape or form either glorified or expressed approval of such a scenario. It is very difficult to see why anyone would want to stop someone from watching such a film.

It happened here: original trailer

Review

Maybe worth pointing out that the time this film was released was closer to WW2 than is today to 9/11, and the latter is still colouring how what goes on in the world is presented in the news.

A friend of mine lives in Bolton and he told me that in the sixties, their Watch Commitee would not allow any live music other than juke boxes in the pubs and people used to have to catch a bus to out lying districts of Farnworth, Horwich, Swinton, Westhoughton etc to watch rock groups and other live entertainment in pubs.

He said it was done so that people would go to the political, legions and working mens clubs in Bolton.
